This is a lovely August week and the garden is bursting with gold. I am very excited about two exhibits I will have work in this month. The first, Fiber Iterations, is at the Textile Art Gallery, NYC and was a juried call. I am honored to have work selected and wish I could be in two places at once and go to the opening.
“Textile Art Gallery NYC is an artist-run gallery, we are dedicated to exhibiting and selling innovative textile art—abstract quilts, weavings, three-dimensional fiber works and all forms of fiber art—that provoke thought, ignite dialogue, and express bold artistic vision.”
Also opening this weekend is Held Together at the South Haven Center for the Arts, South Haven MI. This is an exhibit with two other artists and dear friends, Pat DaRif and Carol L Myers. For over a decade, Pat, Carol and I have met, mostly over zoom, to talk, show what we are working on and give and get feedback. We met as members of the Women’s Caucus for Art, and our work shared some commonalities then, and still does now. This body of work focuses on the idea of resilience. We will be giving a short artist talk before the opening, as well as a “slow stitch” drop-in workshop at the art center the next day.
“The artworks exhibited in Held Together, represent a body of work that spans a period of time during which the world has seemed turned on end. I have found that the very process of slowly stitching together pieces of cloth builds resilience in the face of challenges. Threaded through this work are protective images of cloaks and shields, talismans of the ordinary oracles dwelling among us, mind maps of thinking made visible and wayfinding portals to navigate a path forward. These artworks are a visual history of a troubled time, and a record of my own attempt to meet this difficult moment.
I made these things by hand and by heart, and this is how I hold it together, stitch by stitch, as I try to make sense of the world.”
